The studio will be spent designing a structure on the site of the Tsukiji Fish Market that articulates resilient 21st century urban master plan coastal strategies. Students are to retain Tsukiji Market while incoporating residential areas, retail spaces, open green space, and an Olympic venue for water sports an activities. The factor of water on site raises many issues (low level site with rising sea levels, proximity to the mouth of the Sumida River, flooding control), and thus adding more variables to the studio. The goal of this studio will be to synthesize the Japanese practice of heavy state investment in infrastructure, sophisticated engineering practices, pre-occupation with disaster preparedness and rich history with the sea as an opportunity to synergize tradition, urban planning, architectural production, infrastructure and the environment.
